The Bus
The Bus
“Bus” the name already sounds so dear to me,
and maybe it does sound a little familiar to you as well. And why wouldn’t it?
The name in itself means “for everyone” and is being used in this sense since
1823. The struggling middle class makes up a large portion of that everyone in
the bus definition. Being one of the cheapest and convenient modes of transportation
bus is an inseparable part of normal person’s life. From cruising swiftly on
smooth terrains to bumping across the puddles the ride is no less than an
adventure trip in Kathmandu. “Banepa, Dhulikhel, Koteshwor, Rnac” sounds no
less enchanting to me when I’m waiting on 28 kilo’s bus stand to set off for
the day. The traffic here in Kathmandu never seems to really be shallow but we
struggle finding our ride home many a times. No doubt you feel lucky if you
manage to find a seat, luckier if that’s a seat without any reservations and
luckiest, if there are less raised arm pits exposed to the ambient on that
clumsy space.
There are different kinds of people who board
the bus. Some travel an extra mile to the bus park to find that specific window
seat, these are the ones who are the regular clients of the bus service and
indeed enjoy the journey. There are some who are always in a hurry to get off
and prefer standing near to the exit, no matter how many seats are vacant they
seem to see none. These people are the ones who get into brawl with the
conductor quite often. Then come the people who board the bus by an obligation,
especially the ones who own a car or a motorbike and who would never board if
they had their ride at that moment. They seem to be so conscious about
themselves and their clothes that you can read the “Yikes” expression on their
face from a mile away.
Then there are some who are looking outside
from the two punched holes of that old bus window, who never seem to be
bothered by what’s going on inside the bus. Maybe these people are busy looking
at the farthest of the hills that can be seen remembering their home or
thinking of what their special one is doing at that moment or maybe they are
looking at the pulsars and Chevrolets passing by feeling quite inferior and are
dreaming that they’ll own a BMW someday. Which type are you?
No matter how uncomfortable the seats of the
bus can get, the bus always holds a special place in the hearts of common
people. It is that means that makes us reach our destination slowly but
eventually without troubling our wallet. I do not quite agree when someone says
that the bus just transports people from one place to another. It connects
cities via diverse individuals living miles apart, their dreams, their love and
their hopes even though they have to part via the bus again.
I have been one of the regular users of the
bus service since long. Call it an achievement or something else I have had the
privilege of travelling all the way from Mechi to Mahakali until today by bus
and yes, it was an adventure. Thank you for sparing some time and reading this. Good day people! Never forget to
live, love laugh and enjoy! J
