Understanding
Understanding
Are you ever dissatisfied to that extent that
your chest feels like you can’t take it anymore? That rush inside I could feel
you, when you try your best but still can’t make someone understand.
Understanding, according to the dictionary is an ability to understand something
or someone. Simple may this definition sound, but is actually quite difficult to
understand. Understanding is more than just being with someone on the same
page, relating to what the other person is trying to convey. Understanding is
more like walking in the other person’s shoes and looking things from his/her
perspective. It is someone’s honest
efforts to listen at least for a moment, leaving behind the predetermined understanding
they have about the matter. Well, everyone has an ability to understand but do
you really feel understood? I guess only a few of us do. But quite contrarily,
the one to whom you are trying to explain yourself feels that they understand
you because they think they’re simply listening to what you’re saying.
I’m not much into music but I listen to songs
quite a lot. But, if you’d ask me to sing one I listened a few moments back I’d
only stammer. I was listening to the song but I wasn’t really. Had I actually
listened I’d at least be able to sing a few lines of course. Often, we take these
forms of passive listening to understanding when the voices of predetermined
thoughts inside our heads are still echoing loud. Understanding is to accept
something, embrace it although it doesn’t align with what we had thought of it.
It is an endeavor to know the truth, and a means for correction if one is
wrong.
Understanding someone seems a difficult
process. What makes it difficult is the problem in accepting the truth. We have
a tendency to expect the truth to turn out to what we want. But our idea of
truth doesn’t necessarily change it instead, troubles our peace of mind. Could
you be at peace when someone you care for or yourself are misunderstood? I
guess not. But, quite unknowingly we’re expecting someone to be okay or
understand us at all times even though we wouldn’t be okay if somebody else
would do the same thing to us. And when someone doesn’t put up with us we don’t
hold on for a sec not to judge them straight away, “Everyone’s the same” is
what I get to hear best at these times. What’s yours? More often than not, we don’t
take people are understanding enough because they don’t tolerate enough but
isn’t not putting up an equal reaction?
Our willingness to accept the truth, and thus
understand may involve one to get out of the box at times. It is not so easy to
get out of that comfort zone is it? People often take holding the boundaries
for not accepting the truth. But is the rigidness really worth it? It is completely alright to be stiff if your
values mean more than understanding someone. Understanding is one of major
foundations for a happy and strong relationship of any kind. If you’re looking
for connections as such isn’t a little resilience in accepting something that
doesn’t blend with your values worth it?
